Last year, we refreshed this event with time-pressured, speed build, ceiling and plaster events held at the National Conference. We want to test the apprentices skills, planning and team work – and then recognise the employer that trained them!!

The Apprentice of the Year competition is one of the conference’s most entertaining events and highlights the incredible talents we have within our sector. The Apprentices can win great prizes and be recognised as New Zealand’s best Interior Apprentice. Entrants will need to be at the National Conference and participate in all events testing their skills.

We pay for all their costs and can help with travel as well!!

Qualification – either going through or recently completed within 2 years a BCITO Interior Construction qualification as listed below. No age limit but ideally under 25.

  • Interior Linings Installation – Finishing
  • Interior Linings Installation – Fixing
  • Interior Linings Installation-Fixing, Finishing and Fibrous Plaster Installation
  • Interior Linings Installation – Fixing and Finishing
  • Proprietary Systems Installation – Proprietary Partitions and Suspended Ceilings
  • Proprietary Systems Installation – Suspended Ceilings

We are looking for Fix/Finishes and Ceiling / Interior Systems apprentices. All costs for the apprentice will be covered, and they will also be able to attend the Conference seminars, forums and dinners.

YOUNG LEADER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Following on from the Apprentice of the Year competition, the AWCI Executive have started a new leadership programme whereby an Apprentice or recently qualified young leader joins the Executive for a period of 12 months. To build long-term development of the people in our sector, the aim of this initiative is as follows:

  • To develop younger people within the industry on the workings of the Interior Construction industry
  • Provide governance and business experience for younger leaders who might aspire to own their own business in the sector
  • Ensure the AWCI Executive has a direct, “younger” voice to provide greater benefits for members

The young leader would attend Executive meetings to learn about the industry and gains insight into the association and it’s members. We have been piloting this programme and now wish to open up applications for the Sept 2023 – Aug 2024 period.

AWCI cover the cost of time spent at Executive meetings and all travel for the young leader as well. This is an exciting initiative that helps to assist our young leaders understand more about the industry they work in.

Criteria:

  • Either in a current Interior Construction (IC) apprenticeship or have qualified within the past 2 years.
  • See themselves as a long-term member of the IC industry.
  • Have relevant networks to other IC apprentices
  • Be someone who has a curious nature, wants to learn more about the industry and would be capable of holding an informed discussion at Executive meetings.
